Some history of the Canton Scola |
Built in 1531-32, it's located on the top floor of a adjacent building to the German Synagogue, above the Jewish museum and from the outside, it's not easily distinguishable from the apartments around. One wall of the Canton synagogue, built in the 16th century, is adorned with paintings portraying Jewish history, like 'The Crossing of the Red Sea'. Space was limited, and according to Jewish law it is forbidden to have any building taller than the Synagogue - hence the strange attic location. The Canton Synagogue was probably added to the German Synagogue to house the large number of Jews already in the Ghetto.
